May 22, 2008 Who's Controlling Who?
Tom Petersen, MST
Marshal McLuhan once said, "We shape our tools and there after our tools shape us." McLuhan identified 4 laws that apply to all media at the moment of creation:

The artifact:
  1. EXTENDS some human trait or experience
  2. OBSOLESCES an established way of doing things
  3. RETRIEVES a long lost method or experience
  4. REVERSES into its opposite if pushed far enough

In particular, she's interested in creating programming environments that engage a broad spectrum of children.

As her thesis work, she created and evaluated a programming system for middle school girls called Storytelling Alice that presents programming as a means to the end of storytelling. Learn more at: www.cse.wustl.edu/~ckelleher/
December 13, 2007 The Work Prism & the Design Prism
Joe Grant
User Experience practitioners often have a difficult time justifying and integrating their activities into organizations. Joe will present two models to help us realize that a large part of the dilemma lies in fundamental differences between the endeavors of Design and typical Work so that we:

Understand how we achieve successful outcomes differently from other work groups - Recognize the right questions to drive the structure of product development activities. - Recognize where UX needs to stretch its practices, or partner with others, to be more effective in overall product development.

Plus: It's the holiday season and - if you're anything like us - that means there’s a whole lot of e-shopping going on! Bring your best-of-the-best or worst-of-the-worst e-shopping examples to share.
